Balik ke masa lalu di hampir penghujung tahun 90an, tepatnya tahun 1998. Usiaku masih 15 tahun dan sedang asik-asiknya belajar di bangku SMP. Sekolahku disana hanya ada di kecamatan, sementara aku tinggal di desa yang cukup terpencil. Setiap hari pergi ke sekolah dengan berjalan kaki kurang lebih 8 km pulang dan pergi. Cukup melelahkan, belum lagi kalau cuaca panas sekali, atau tatkala musim hujan tiba. Saya dan teman-teman terkadang basah kuyup dibuatnya.
Di tahun-tahun itu sudah banyak teman dan anak tetanggaku yang berangkat ke sekolah menaiki sepeda, yang memilik sepeda motorpun sudah ada satu atau dua orang. Hanya aku dan beberapa teman lain yang rajin jogging setiap pagi (baca jalan kaki) menuju ke sekolah. Rata-rata keluarga kami berekonomi biasa saja, terkesan sederhana, dan menumpu-kan kebutuhan keluarga dari sektor pertanian. Sehingga status bersekolah sampai tingkat SMP bisa dikatakan sesuatu yang dianggap hebat. Kami sering diajari bagaimana susahnya mencari uang.
